The issues that have been raised about the HD300 need to be voiced to Sony Tech support 1-800-838-7669.
Just a few to start with:
1- The guide defaulting to the "ALL" setting, rather than user selectable (favorites, custom, ect...)
2- Misc. audio dropouts
3- Freezups.
Some people may confuse Freezups with software updates.
Your receiver takes 3 different updates 1- An update to refill the 7-day advanced DirecTV guide. 2- An update that adds security features to your access card. 3- An update to the operating software of the unit i.e. system settings, preferences, guide settings ect.... My unit received 3 updates on the first day.
Initially I thought the unit froze on me, when I tuned to a station it seemed to freeze for about 10-15 seconds, then the front display said "Wait". Then the unit automatically resets itself (turns off then on). After the unit resets it automatically refreshes the available channels (you will see a window that has a progress bar notifying you that it is scanning for channels). All of this is normal!
Other people may be experiencing freezups for other reasons, make sure you are not just receiving an update before you call tech support.
I was told by an upper level tech support person that the guide defaulting to the "ALL" setting was due to licensing issues with DirecTV and their stations, then the next day another upper level tech said that he had never heard of licensing issues, and that it was just the way the unit was designed. Either way its not good software programming.
The tech person told me that if enough customers complained of the situation that they would fix the problem with a software update, that would be distributed via DirecTV.
I proposed two fixes to the tech support person:
1- Make a selection in the preferences menu to allow the user to default to the guide of his/her choice (Custom, Favorites, All ect....) or make it automatically change to whatever was viewed last.
2- Allow the user to delete undesirable OTA (over-the-air)signals from the menu, rather than just hide them. As some of you may have found out, hiding them eliminates them from the Custom Guide only. An example might be a week VHF/UHF station from an outside market that is just strong enough to be picked up by the unit. I myself don't want these stations clogging up the menu.
As all of you know, this is one of the most expensive units out there. We deserve quality that matches the price. Call Sony Tech support (1-800-838-7669) and demand a software update to remedy these and possibly other issues!!!
